Pathao: From jobless to the owner of $100 million

Three founders of ride-sharing company, Pathao, did something that could not be done by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Alibaba founder Jack Ma and even Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Within a very short period of time, Pathao became so popular that it attracted foreign investors to invest a huge amount of money in this local startup. It made three unemployed youths- Hussain M Elius, Shifat Adnan and Kishore Hashemi- millionaire. Now, they are the role model to many youth who want to start their own startup.
In Dhaka city, smartphone-based transport app Pathao has already created a lot of response in the transport system. Pathao has revolutionized the transport system of Dhaka, one of the populous cities in the world. Such initiative has decreased the suffering and adversity of the dwellers of the capital.

It was March 2015. Of the three entrepreneurs, Hussain M Elius had just completed his M.B.A degree in Marketing from North South University. Shifat Adnan, another founder, had already graduated with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). These two young people thought of doing something on their own instead of running after job.

To make their thought come true, two friends started working as delivery agent in a limited capacity. They delivered documents to homes on by-cycle. That is how ‘Pathao’, today’s popular ride sharing company, began its journey.

At a time, two friends thought of starting two-wheeler or motorcycle service. Motorbike would easily take the passenger from one place to another place. As a result, it will save time on the one hand, and on the other hand, passengers will not have to pay extra money. At that time, Kishore Hashemi, who studied in Canada, joined Pathao.

The three people together started the work of making app with the local developer. After making app, they launched the smartphone-based motorbike service, Pathao, for the first time in the capital. This service was launched in November 2016.

These three young people, who started from zero, are now the owners of $100 million or Tk 820 crore in Bangladeshi currency, which is a unique record for Bangladeshi youth. They started the business with three motorcycles, their only asset.

With honesty and industry, they started getting success in a short period of time. Seeing their success, many foreign investors invested in their business. As a result, these three young people could become the owner of $100 million.

Crossing the national boundary, Pathao is going to set its foot in international arena. This organization, which provides bike, car and food services through app, is going to start its operation in Nepal now this time. This is going to be the first Bangladeshi ride-sharing start-up to start its operation abroad. Pathao officials have said that they will give formal announcement regarding this matter very soon.

Ryan: A Seven-Year-Old Kid is the Highest-Paid YouTube Star

It is very usual that kids spend most of their time playing with their toys either alone or with other same-aged children, but Ryan, a little preschooler, spends most of his time making videos for his YouTube channel named Ryan ToysReview. This toy review channel has not only brought him stardom but also made him the highest-paid YouTube star.
According to a report published by Forbes magazine, the seven-year-old Ryan earned $22 million in the last year, which ended on June 1, 2018. His YouTube channel had a total of 26 billion views since its journey in March 2015. His YouTube channel has also more than 17 million subscribers, mostly children around his age.

Ryan’s popular YouTube channel earns revenue from two main sources: pre-roll ads and sponsors, hence making him a mini-millionaire. Apart from making reviews of toys, he also launched his own line of toys and apparels, known as Ryan’s World, with Walmart this past August.

After the report got published, Ryan’s parents received both positive and negative comments from readers. Some people think that Ryan’s parents are taking advantage of their child’s popularity and making money. They also called for a ban of the videos. However, Ryan is enjoying his fame. Seeing Ryan’s success, many people will now try to follow this path and create their own YouTube channel. I doubt very few might get success in this online platform.

Mobile app is changing urban life

Hillol Islam will go to his workplace in Rampura from Kalyanpur. While getting prepared, he calls motorcycle using a ride sharing app from home. Motorcycle appears in three minutes. This job holder takes the help of Google Maps to avoid traffic jam. But at the end of the ride, he faces problem while paying the bill for not having change. Meanwhile, he does not have money in bKash also.
While thinking about how he will pay the fare, his bank app comes to his mind. On the spur of the moment, he transfers money from his bank account to bKash account through app. Later, he pays the fare through bKash.

Not only Hillol Islam, city dwellers are using different types of apps to make everyday life easier. App users are saying, “We are getting many different types of services through apps. As a result, time, money and labor are being saved. With the touch of technology, change has come in the lifestyle of urban residents.”

When asked about this, Ministry of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology, Mustafa Jabbar, told the Prothom Alo, “Worldwide digitalization starts from mobile phone. The trend has also started in Bangladesh. Government has the plan to provide all types of services through app.”

Mentioning that 900 types of services can be directly provided to general people through app, the minister also said, we are working on this issue at the government and non-government sectors. If 5G comes, there will be a seminal change in the field of services through app.

Hillol, who uses various types of apps, told the Prothom Alo, “Earlier I had to wait for long time on the bus stand to go to office. Either I had to get on an overcrowded bus or take a CNG-run auto rickshaw following a hard bargain to settle the fare. Now transport vehicle can be hired from house through app. For this, expenditure has also been decreased.

Urban dwellers are being dependent on apps for different work, including hassle-free commute, reduction on the stress of traffic jam, easy banking service, home delivery of foods, shopping and learning language.

The reporter talked to at least 30 city residents of different ages about the usage of app. They said, “App has made city life easy.” Private bank officer, Mohsena Chowdhury, said about how life has become easy now. She said, “My daughter persisted that her friends would be invited at home on her birthday. But she did not get leave from office.” When she was working with an upset mind thinking what she would tell her daughter, one of her colleagues came up with the solution. Mohsena instantly downloaded a food’s home delivery app and ordered all the favorite foods of her daughter and her friends.”

S M Ashraf, CEO of the mobile phone-based app developer, said, “The rate of smartphone and internet usage among people is increasing. As a result, the use of mobile apps is also increasing. Positive change has come in the service sector.

While searching, it has come to be known that there are thousands of necessary apps including travel, education, health, traffic congestion, security, reading books, entertainment and fashion. Of these, some apps have been developed to provide services only to city people.

M A Mobin Khan, Managing Director of app developing organization Ethics Advance Technologies Limited, said that keeping the demand of app in their knowledge, they have started to provide services to government and private organizations through apps. He further said, “Around 99% of the family members in this country are using mobile phones. For this reason, various organizations are moving towards giving services through apps. In the next five years, most of the services will be through apps. The touch of this change is becoming visible in big cities already.”

But Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MCC, S M Ashraf, putting a warning for the app developing companies, said that many apps contain various types of user information including name, cell phone number and e-mail ID. For the safety of the customers, they will have to be aware of such information not being mishandled.

Earn money with Facebook using Ad Breaks

Like Blog, YouTube and WordPress, people from Bangladesh can also earn money with Facebook. This most popular social networking site made its Ad Breaks facility available for our country people on Wednesday (November 7). Now, publishers and video content creators alongside increasing their number of followers can also make money by using this facility in specific videos or in all videos on their page. That indicates, by using Ad Breaks, video makers can transform their videos into a form of currency. To be more specific, they can turn their videos into source of revenue.
To join the Ad Breaks, publishers and content creators will have to visit fb.me/joinadbreaks, Creator Studio or their Page Video Insights.

Benchmark PR, which is the public relations partner of Facebook in Bangladesh, in a press release said, “Today's launch continues our global expansion to more languages and more countries as we continue to find ways to support publishers and creators globally as they make and upload great videos for their engaged audiences on Facebook.”

Hoping that Ad Breaks facility will be able to change traditional people’s thought about Facebook. It is no more a platform to spend time unnecessarily. People nowadays are doing business by using this social media platform. If we search, we may find some of these Facebook pages to be turned into a well-known offline shop.

However, Ad Breaks cannot be an alternative to Adsense. Unlike Adsense, Facebook cannot let its users use their monetization facility in content. I am expecting that very soon Facebook will sort out this problem.
